SCAA Artifact Highlight F-4 Rambler 04 - Phantom Deception

January 2, 1967. It was the usual bombing mission the U.S. Air Force had carried out of Ubon for the past few months, attacking targets in North Vietnam as part of its "Operation Rolling Thunder.” Radar controllers began directing MiG-21 interceptors to engage the inbound F-105 Thunderchiefs. "This will not take long," thought Nguyen Duc Thuan, one of the MiG-21 pilots vectored to attack the incoming bombers. The tactics were solid and had worked before, but Nguyen had a different thought as his MiG-21 punched through the clouds heading toward a flight of four F-4 Phantom II fighters, not the F-105 bombers. The trap set by Col. Robin Olds' "Operation Bolo" was about to snare its first victory. Rambler 04, flown by Maj. Philip P. Combies and 1st Lt. Lee R. Dutton, scored the first kill for Rambler flight and fifth of seven overall. This aircraft has been at Aviation Challenge and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center since the early 1990s. Astronaut Robert "Hoot" Gibson stopped by Aviation Challenge to talk with us about his experience flying Navy F-4 Phantoms.
